One-on-One With Mom: A Christmas Tradition
I love the Christmas season. The lights, the smell of evergreen, the baked goods and family traditions. My mom’s holiday tradition was to take each of us four kids individually to downtown Detroit for a day trip. It was a big deal. We looked forward to it every year. On the big trip day, we dressed up in our Sunday best, and headed to the bus stop across the street from our house to board the ‘Woodward – Downtown’ bus.”
The Grandeur of J.L. Hudson’s Flagship Store
J. L. Hudson’s (current day Macy’s) flagship store was in the heart of downtown Detroit. Entering the store was a feast for the eyes. Humongous glass candy cases everywhere, and the smell of maple nut fudge and chocolate was always wafting through the air. In addition, each department dazzled guests with giant Christmas trees surrounded by brightly wrapped gift boxes. It was fabulous! Moreover, the seventh floor was transformed into a Christmas Village and outshined every other part of the store. In October, store managers plastered want ads for Christmas elves across every department, boldly listing the requirements: 16 years of age, 5′ 6″, and dress size 7. Looking back, it’s funny how early dreams collided with reality, at 10 years old, I was already 5’ 6.”
From Childhood Wonder to Sacred Meaning
Childhood memories aside, the Christmas season carries deep spiritual meaning. It is a time of hope, renewal, and divine love entering human history. It bears mentioning that the exact date of the birth of Jesus is unknown, December 25 was chosen as a symbolic day to honor the birth of the Savior.
A Final Invitation
Through nativity scenes, Christmas productions, or candlelit services, the story of Jesus’ birth continues to inspire reflection, gratitude, and acts of compassion. This season, I invite you to remember: holiness often hides in the ordinary. Quiet faithfulness builds legacy. Jesus Christ, the light of the world.
